If you use a private water supply, assistance is available to help make it safer for you, your family and visitors to your home.

Perth & Kinross Council's Water Team can conduct a free assessment of your private water supply, give advice on cleaning and other measures, and provide help with accessing improvement grants of up to £800 per property. Applicants, whether owners or occupiers are not means-tested and additional funding is available for people on some benefits.

Around a third of the private water samples taken in Perth and Kinross fail to meet current bacteriological standards due to the presence of potentially harmful bacteria. This means that consumers of private water supplies may be putting themselves at risk from waterborne illnesses such as E Coli O157, Cryptosporidium, Campylobacter and Salmonella.

Over 1000 householders in Perth and Kinross have already made use of the national grants available to make their water supply safe.  Feedback from local applicants has been overwhelmingly positive, with residents saying they would recommend the grants process to friends and neighbours.

Environmental Health Principal Officer Kirsty Steven said: “We are working hard to raise awareness of the funding available to local residents to help ensure their private water supplies are safe and reduce the risks that can come from untreated or poorly maintained supplies. There has been a good uptake so far and we hope that many more people who use private water supplies will apply for these grants.”

The Council's Water Officers are there to help you through the improvement process, from advising on what needs to be done to helping fill in the forms.
