On Saturday 20th March a glorious sight was spotted briefly above the village. A flight of swans numbering 32 passed up from Baledgarno and headed north over towards Lochton and beyond. Most likely Whooper swans by the wonderful sound they were making as they called to each other in flight, although I am no expert on swan species in flight.
Swallows and House Martins.
It must be spring. Swallow and House Martine sightings in Kinnaird and Ballindean in the week up to the 30th April and Steph reports seeing about 10 swallows flying above the rear of the Antique Centre on 29th April.
Linda at East Newton saw a swallow on Sunday 25th April, although at that point she had not seen any house martins. A swallow was seen near Westmill, Kinnarid on 19th April but it wasn't until Thursday 29th April that I saw 4 Swallows flying over Abernyte Church, and on the same day that Steph saw them at the antique centre. They are arriving but it would be nice to see a few more of them and some House Martins as well. The Swallows arre so late that we could be seeing Swifts soon. They generally appear second week of May.
There were hundreds of Sand Martins down at the reed beds on 12th April, but they are always the first to arrive.
Just to let you know we saw 2 swifts over the house on Sat 12th. I then heard them screaming and looked up and saw 4 of them circling on Sunday morning. I need to put a sign up telling them there’s a swift box waiting for them to use!
