This afternoon I spotted an interesting bird soaring above the village. With the aid of a pair of binoculars it was clear just how big the bird was and that it was not a Buzzard, it was much bigger and with wings a different shape. The bird was an immature Sea Eagle, and certainly a first for Abernyte as far as I know!
This afternoon ( September 17th) I finally heard a bird call that I have been listening out for. A number of people have told me about Ravens in the area, but I could not find them. Then today we not only heard Ravens but had magnificent views of them over Abernyte hill. I say them because we had a pair of Ravens displaying they attracted some attention from other members of the crow family, but the size difference was obvious. A pair of Buzzards also joined in the aerial display; Ravens are a little larger than Buzzards as well as the colour differences so it is easy to see the difference.
If you see a large black bird with a diamond shaped tail, then start thinking Raven. You will find some images and a sound recording to help confirm the identification
