Sitting quietly in the garden this afternoon (Friday May 13th) I have a very good view of a male Blackcap. I have been hearing Blackcap song and contact call for a few days now, but this was the first sighting. The male Blackcap is a spectacular bird a slate grey back with a light breast, and a pure black cap, the female is the same but with a brown cap. As can be seen here www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/b/blackcap/index.aspx The song can be heard here www.sussexwt.org.uk/blog/wp-content/uplo.../04/blackcap-070.mp3 and the contact call which is a hard “tac tac” sound, a bit like two stones being hit together, can be heard here sounds.bl.uk/View.aspx?item=022M-W1CDR0001532-0200V0.xml Keep your eye and ears open. Good luck.

And Swifts have also arrived over Abernyte - there were at least 2 of them as well as house martins flying over Abernyte near the church last Sunday (8th May). It would be good to know if anyone has them nesting around here.
