Gold Finch no more! was created by Gordon
I now know why the Gold Finch numbers around the Nyger seed feeder are dwindling. From the 30 or so at the beginning of November they have slowly declined to around 12 regular numbers feeding. Until this morning when a sparrow-hawk took one from the feeder and made off. It then returned 20 minutes later for the next course and took another from the feeder.

Should I stop feeding Nyger for now while there are still Gold Finch left?

We had a sparrow-hawk visit a couple of days ago and it went very quiet for a while which what usually happens. The hawk moves on to pastures new and the birds start going about their business as usual until the next surprise visit. As surpise attack is it's main weapon it will leave the birds in peace for a while.

I have just seen a large flock of Goldfinches feeding on the ground. The number was not easy to count; large area feeding in and hiding in the vegetation etc, but would have been at least 25.
