Woodcock was created by Gordon
My first sighting around the village this season. Flushed first thing in the morning at the Whitehills Road end on Sunday 21st November.
Full moon, clear sky and east wind overnight. Is it too much of a stretch to say a new arrival?

Around that time the BTO Bird track web site records a substancial increasse in woodcock sighting, so it could well be a new arrival.

I was out walking up towards White hills this afternoon (November 22nd) and had a good if brief view of a woodcock. It was this time last year that Gordon spotted one.

Would I be correct in saying that they usually come over from Scandinavia at the full moon? If so the moon about a week ago would have been spot on.

The evidence is that the woodcock winter migration to Scotland is mainly from Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Migrants have been reported as out numbering the locals by 13:1, with the first arrivals each year about mid October. The birds migrate by night and the November Full moon is known in the shooting world as the Woodcock moon, and this coincides with the peak arrival period.
