The new S1/S2 age campaigning group in our charge (which has decided to be called ‘Teens 4 Action’, to acknowledge the four churches of our charge!) has taken up the Kilombero Rice Challenge issued to us by Just Trading Scotland.
Kilombero Rice is a high-quality multi-purpose rice, excellent for all savoury uses and as a pudding rice, and it is grown in the Kilombero district of Malawi. Through JTS the farmers receive a good price, the rice is shipped and marketed at minimal cost, and through the ‘Rice Challenge’ Scottish churches and schools are invited to sell the rice in batches of 90 x 1kg – and that produces enough profit to educate a farmer’s child at secondary school for one year.
T4A will have a stall in church after the service on 1 March, which is the middle Sunday of Fair Trade Fortnight.
The 1kg bags (which are white rice) will cost £3 each, and we really hope you’ll buy a bag or two for your own kitchen and perhaps one for someone else.
Please make a point of coming ready to buy rice on 1 March, with the right money if possible though change should be available. Recipe cards prepared by one of our group, and information about Kilombero prepared by another member, will be available on the table that day.
This is a big effort by T4A who are trusting you all to support them and meet the challenge.
